Today in Rock History
November 4, 2000
Evanescence released their debut independent album, Origin on Bigwig Enterprises. Produced by Ben Moody on an 8-track in his apartment and Amy Lee’s family attic (1996–1999), it featured gothic rock, piano ballads, and nu-metal edges. Key tracks included “My Immortal,” “Imaginary,” “Whisper,” “Where Will You Go?,” “Even in Death,” “Lies” (with Bruce Fitzhugh), “Away from Me,” “Solitude,” “Understanding,” and instrumental “Eternal.” Only 2,500 copies were pressed and sold locally in Little Rock via shows and Bigwig’s site. “Whisper” got local radio play as lead single; “Lies” aired summer 2000. No mainstream charts, but the polished demo secured their major-label deal with Wind-up Records.
