I would be surprised if you really cannot grasp that for anyone who thinks genocide is close to an ultimate crime, and who thinks Israel is committing genocide, and who thinks the US is Israel's principal support, Gaza may legitimately be the defining issue for the next election. All the Democrats have to do is to see genocide where there is genocide, and to have nothing to do with it. Really too much to ask?

Wow. This post shocked me. I had taken you seriously in articles by you I had read. Somewhat conservative, maybe reactionary, but not the worst. But this is just tunnel-vision on every issue you raise. You reduce vielfältige issues to stick figure issues. Shocking in a journalist. The one fundamental flaw in Applebaum’s screed is that Russia is winning on all fronts.

Last time I checked it was Kiev’s streets filled with protesters, while Moscow’s streets are filled with citizens going about their daily business.

Ukraine is increasingly isolated while Russia engages constructively with the entirety of the world that isn’t under the thumb of the US/EU cabal.

It’s the Russian army that advances relentlessly.

It’s the Ukrainian side that kidnaps men off the street to feed into the meat grinder.

It’s Russian missiles and drones devastating Ukraine while Ukraine harasses Russia with drone-based photo ops.

It’s Ukrainian drone factories going “boom” while Russian defense industry rolls on unimpeded.

The Russian economy that is growing and garnering tens of billions of dollars in foreign investments in June alone while the Ukrainian economy exists solely off of foreign handouts.

Putin is under no pressure.

Zelensky is besieged.

So the fact is Ukraine is being erased as a viable nation state.

People like Anne Applebaum are facilitating this erasure by injecting a deliberately misleading narrative into the mix which is picked up by Ukrainian people desperate to believe in the notion that Ukraine can somehow defeat Russia if only the West continues to underwrite the conflict.

Meanwhile Ukrainian men are becoming an extinct breed.

And without men, there is no Ukraine.

@TomLondon6 Actually, it's not a matter of reality, it's a matter of whether people can say what they think. Even if most people think Israel's actions are not like the Nazis', someone else is entitled to think they are, and to say so, in a society that supports free speech.
