You’re right. “Run hot” concedes too much. It implies the models are directionally correct and just miscalibrated. That’s the diversion.

The sharper statement:

No individual CMIP model, at any resolution, over any multi-decadal window, has reproduced the observed record within anything resembling scientific tolerance.

Not tropospheric temperature. Not the tropical hot spot (which is predicted and absent). Not Antarctic trends. Not ocean heat content profiles. Not precipitation patterns. Not regional trends. Not the pause. Not the spatial structure of warming.
Every model fails on multiple independent diagnostics simultaneously. The “ensemble spread brackets observations” claim only works because the spread is enormous and because failures on different diagnostics are hidden by only showing GMST.

A model that fails on tropospheric temperature, tropical amplification, precipitation, and regional patterns is not a model that “runs a bit warm.” It is a model that does not describe the system.

The “runs hot” framing exists precisely to preserve the fiction that the physics is right and only the magnitude is off. It isn’t. The physics parameterizations, particularly for clouds, convection, and the water cycle, are wrong at the level that determines the answer. Getting the wrong number for the wrong reason is not a near miss.

The Times Apparently Lifted Liberally From My Reporting About Jason Arday And Did Not Credit Me

For a scandal about lifting other people’s work without crediting them, I must say I am incensed that @TheTimes ran this story yesterday a week after I first reported about the Simon & Schuster edits on my Substack and five days after I reported those details in the @FreeBeacon. And yet The Times did not credit me.

The Times reporters @samueljlovett and @EmilyPrescott30 also did not credit me as having identified in real time on X last week as three Cambridge academics removed their names from the Good Law Project letter backing Arday. I also reported those details for the Free Beacon, on Friday. And yet The Times claims that it is the one that “can reveal” this news.

I would like Times to credit my reporting immediately, along with the proper hyperlinks, including to both Substack and the Free Beacon, and add an editor’s note indicating that they failed to do so in the first place. (See the thread for those.)
