🌴DITV Player Spotlight: Frank Medina @Frank_Tank70
Position: Offensive Lineman | #70
Height/Weight: 5’11” | 318 lbs
Class: Redshirt Sophomore
Hometown: San Benito, TX
High School: San Benito HS @SanBenito_FB@PGreyhoundsBaby
Every team has underdogs — but not every underdog ends up in the starting lineup. That’s where Frank Medina flips the script.
At 5’11”, Medina doesn’t fit the prototype of your typical college O-lineman. Most guys in the trenches stretch 6’3” and taller, built like towers. But Medina? He’s built like a pitmaster’s smoker — low, wide, heavy, and impossible to move once he’s set. That leverage, that grit, that chip on his shoulder — it’s what took him from a San Benito open tryout to a starting spot on the first D1 team in the Valley.
Back in high school, Medina was the anchor at Bobby Morrow Stadium, a captain who piled up hardware: District 32-6A Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, All-Area First Team, and RGV All-Star selection. He lived the Battle of the Arroyo against Harlingen, felt the Greyhound crowd pack the stands every Friday, and set the tone in the trenches the way San Benito football always has. As Coach Dan Gomez put it:
“Our line has always been the foundation. It’s built on discipline, toughness, and pride.”
That’s the foundation Medina carried into college ball. No stars, no scholarship — just a kid who showed up to prove he belonged. At UTRGV tryouts, Coach Travis Bush set the standard:
“We’re looking for kids who are willing to put in the work, who’ll fight for every rep. If you earn it, there’s a place for you here.”
Medina earned it — and then some.
San Benito has always produced names the Valley can be proud of: Erik Cantu (Rice), Gabriel De Leon (Texas Lutheran), Aaron Reyes (future Vaquero), plus legends like Olympic gold medalist Bobby Morrow and Tejano icons Freddy Fender and Bobby Pulido. Now Medina adds his name to that list, carrying Greyhound pride into Vaquero orange.
And here’s the thing — he doesn’t need to say a word about it. His story speaks for itself: 5’11”, open tryout, San Benito kid, now a D1 starter. That’s not just football — that’s the kind of story that lives Down in the Valley.
Valley Dawg Certified: Underdog. Starter. Greyhound made. Vaquero strong.

After much consideration and talking with my family , I have decided to enter the transfer portal with 4 years of eligibility remaining. Thankful For the opportunity from @UTRGVFootball .
San Benito native Frank Medina is the smallest OL on the @UTRGVFootball roster, but that hasn't stopped him from earning a spot with the ones this spring. Medina and the Vaqueros are set for the first spring game in program history Thursday in Brownsville. https://t.co/OKXlZutx2M
