Studies show that most young children need a lot of different sensory stimulation for normal development. Skin contact, or physical touch such as hugging, is one of the most important stimulations required to grow a healthy brain and a strong body.
I told my friend, poet Mary Oliver, how I do not use the word 'No' with children. Oliver said, “When my dog Percy has made mischief, I say No, no.” Even 'No, no' communicates something entirely different than 'No.' Leave it to a poet to understand the power of a gentle voice.
