This is not the game where you want to die on the hill of “the referee gifted Argentina the win.”

Was the refereeing weird at times? Yes. Especially early on, it felt messy and inconsistent. But after the second hydration break, there was no clear pattern of favoritism, no grand conspiracy, and certainly no scandal big enough to explain Egypt losing the game.

The main talking point is obviously Argentina’s third goal, but honestly, the alleged fouls in that sequence were very soft at best. Minimal contact, especially on the holdingq where the ball was already out of reach, even in Salah he had already lost the ball, so nothing obvious, nothing that screams robbery. You can argue Egypt were unlucky, but calling that a gifted goal feels like a massive stretch.

As for the foul on Lisandro Martínez that ruled out Egypt’s would-be second goal, that call was correct. The contact was there, and by the book, it is a foul. Now, do I think there are double standards in how those situations are judged? Absolutely. I am not convinced every team gets that whistle in the same moment. But that does not change the fact that, on this specific play, the decision itself was spot on.

So yes, the refereeing was not perfect. But this was not some Argentina handout. Egypt had their moments, Argentina had theirs, and the game was decided by football more than by the referee.
