I sent UGX 400,000 to the wrong number. I realised my mistake several minutes later when the person who was supposed to receive the money did not send the customary message confirming receipt. I called. You sent it to the wrong number, she told me. I immediately rang the accidental beneficiary. Instead of finding a frightened person wondering why UGX 400,000 had mysteriously landed on her phone, I found somebody whose theology had already processed the transaction. She told me that the previous night she had spent hours in church praying to God for a miracle of UGX 500,000. Then morning arrived, and providence, apparently using MTN Mobile Money and suffering a minor accounting error, deposited UGX 400,000 into her account. She therefore had a complaint. Her miracle was UGX 100,000 short. Instead of returning my money, she asked me to be merciful and send the missing UGX 100,000 so that God’s promise could be fulfilled in full. I tried to explain that this was not divine intervention. It was human error. She disagreed and told me her daughter had not gone to school because she could not pay the fees. She asked me to stop looking at the transaction through the eyes of a man who had lost UGX 400,000 and examine it through the eyes of a mother who had spent the previous night petitioning heaven for UGX 500,000. By the time she finished presenting her case, I had somehow moved from complainant to defendant. Worse, I was beginning to feel guilty for underpaying a miracle I had never contracted to perform. Bantumwe, I sent the remaining UGX 100,000 and to this day, I suspect that woman bewitched me. There is no satisfactory economic explanation for discovering that you have accidentally lost UGX 400,000 and responding to the emergency by voluntarily losing another UGX 100,000. She told me she was deep in Bududa. Landslides had carried away her home and crops. She also told me that relief items meant for people like her had been stolen, naming @AnitahAmong and Agnes Nandutu in her account of the mabaati affair. By then, however, I was no longer conducting due diligence. I had already been appointed Minister of Finance in her miracle government. I had intended to recover UGX 400,000 but I ended the telephone call having paid the full UGX 500,000 she had asked God for. The most disturbing part is that somewhere deep in Bududa, that woman probably went back to church and testified that prayer works. And technically, she has evidence. Rukirabachwezi
