Much of the source of income discrimination in NYC is fueled by bias, fears, and stereotypes about households with rental subsidies. Enforce fair housing laws! https://t.co/e57wapE0mo
This decision creates change, not just for one individual, but for thousands of renters denied their fair housing rights. We must use the legal process to disrupt systemic housing discrimination & ensure that segregation & exclusion are no longer viable options for landlords.

Congrats to The Fortune Society, the Fair Housing Justice Center, and all who contributed to this outcome. The message is clear: a policy that uses past criminal justice involvement to summarily exclude people from affordable housing opportunities is racially discriminatory.

The community preference policy in NYC does not prevent displacement or stem gentrification, but in many neighborhoods, it does limit the housing choices available to people based on race and national origin and reinforces existing patterns of residential racial segregation.
Very exciting news that @eliseboddie will become #2 in the Civil Rights Division. DOJ and the nation will benefit tremendously from your leadership, experience, and vision. Make lots of good trouble!
There's nothing private about commercial speech that housing providers use to offer housing for rent or sale. It is precisely because too many agents still refuse to provide the same information to consumers of all races that this speech should not be kept private or protected.
Why do we protect the privacy rights of fair housing violators in eleven states while failing to protect entire populations who routinely face mistreatment, steering, and denial of housing opportunities based on race? https://t.co/MBvXhIMbB2
In granting a preliminary injunction to a homeless woman with two children who was denied an apartment in the Bronx by the Parkchester Preservation Company due to alleged source of income discrimination, a NY judge issued an 11-page order citing the "brutality of homelessness."
@FSCDems The FHA is 54 years old, but it has never been fully implemented, adequately resourced, or vigorously enforced. Persistent systemic housing discrimination and residential racial segregation is the norm and, for too many people, the promise of equal housing is largely illusive.
Fairness demands that we protect justice-involved populations from housing discrimination. Why can't NYC get this done? Similar laws passed in Seattle, Detroit, New Jersey, and other parts of our nation. It's long overdue. NY needs leadership on this vital fair housing issue.
"We will never eliminate race discrimination in housing if we fail to protect people who have conviction records from discrimination caused by background checks." Read FHJC Policy coordinator Britny McKenzie's powerful new piece in City Limits. https://t.co/YH9ztymdBv
@feenoirenyc Marie, I will also miss working with you. You have made so many contributions to the FHJC since our inception and I'm so fortunate that I was able to work closely with you over the past couple years. Thanks and all the best in your future endeavors.
"Part of our problem is that we have never totally enforced the Fair Housing Act" - HUD Sec. Fudge. While it is refreshing to hear this nugget of wisdom coming from the HUD Secretary, may I respectfully suggest that we fix this problem by vigorously enforcing fair housing laws.
