The Roman Catholic church operated as government across the Holy Roman Empire until the rise of Protestantism and nation states. Naturally, corruption comes with power.
The Church of England became the spiritual warden of the English state via the monarchy. The Queen pledged in her Coronation to uphold the Word of God.
It was not a perfect arrangement but it showed how Christianity undergirded a system of law and government that provided unprecedented freedom and progress and that eventually birthed the American Republic.
