🌊🍻 Our Free LitterAT project partner, Sara Cloux from the Marine Institute, took part in #PintOfScience2026 with a presentation on marine litter, its fragmentation into microplastics, and its impacts on marine ecosystems.

The talk also highlighted how the Lagrangian models used in #FreeLitterAT help identify accumulation hotspots and estimate the relative contribution of different litter sources.
In collaboration with CETMAR, Veolia and local stakeholders, the waste was characterised to improve knowledge on passively fished litter. Most of the waste consisted of plastic fishing gear such as nets, ropes, trawl components and shellfish pots.

Last week, partners from UBS participated in a #FreeLitterAT pilot action at the fishing port of Dieppe (Normandy), analysing marine litter collected by vessels participating in the Fishing for Litter programme.
♻️ 2,240 tonnes of waste were recovered in one year.

🌊 Final day at #MARLICE2026!
Free LitterAT partners contributed through presentations: Hilda de P. (@ULusofona ) presented project activities, Jesús G. (IEO) moderated the AI monitoring session and presented microplastics work, while João M. (ARDITI) shared their work.
🌊 Day 2 at #MARLICE2026
Free LitterAT partners continue their participation in the forum, contributing to exchanges and collaboration on marine litter prevention and circular economy solutions.
🌍 Working together towards litter-free Atlantic coastal communities.

Partners of the #FreeLitterAT project met in Cascais on 24–25 March for the VI Steering Committee meeting.
The meeting was an opportunity to review progress across the project’s activities and to further strengthen collaboration among partners 🤝🌍

🔬 New research from our partners @ciimarup within the #FreeLitterAT project!
A new study optimizes a method to detect microplastics in seaweeds, improving extraction from complex algal tissues while preserving polymer integrity. 🌿

🌊 On 12 February, our colleagues @IEOVigo delivered the talk “Our seas at risk: the impact of marine litter” to 30 students at IES Coruxo.
It aimed to raise awareness about the negative effects of plastics and other pollutants on our oceans.
