This is not an everyday kind of activity in the church. Might even look cringy. But the Bible provides precedents for God acting through material remains or objects linked to holy persons:
• Elisha’s bones revived a dead man (2 Kings 13:20–21).
• Handkerchiefs and aprons that touched St. Paul healed the sick and drove out demons (Acts 19:11–12).
• Even Peter’s shadow healed the sick (Acts 5:15); the woman with the issue of blood was healed by touching Jesus’ cloak (Matthew 9:20–22 / Mark 5:27–29).
Early Christians treated the remains of martyrs with great respect. When martyrs were executed others gathered their remains and buried them properly. Sometimes only bones remained as flesh had rotted. The early Christians sometimes celebrated the Eucharist near or over the martyrs’ tombs, reflecting Revelation 6:9 (souls of martyrs under the altar). The practice is ancient and predates any formal theologizing.

We call them relics, from Latin relinquere which means, “to leave behind”. A relic is a physical object with a direct association with a saint or Christ. Traditional Catholic classification is as follows:
• First-class: Bodily remains (bones, blood, etc.) or items directly tied to Christ’s life/Passion (e.g., True Cross, the Shroud of Turin etc) or the saints.
• Second-class: Items owned or used by a saint (clothing, personal objects).
• Third-class: Objects touched to a first or second-class relic.

Core Theological Principles:
• Bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit: Saints’ bodies were living members of Christ and temples of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16–17; 6:19). They remain connected to the person and will share in the resurrection and glorification. Venerating them affirms the goodness of the body and the promise of bodily resurrection.
• Incarnational and sacramental worldview: Christianity holds that God works through matter (Incarnation, sacraments). Relics are instruments or vehicles of grace; any miracle or benefit comes from God alone, not an inherent power in the object. St. Thomas Aquinas described them as “organs of the Holy Spirit.”
• Communion of saints and intercession: Relics make present the saint who intercedes in heaven. Honoring the relic honors the saint as a model and friend of God, which leads to greater adoration of God. St. Jerome wrote: “We do not worship relics… but we venerate the relics of the martyrs in order the better to adore him whose martyrs they are.”
