I am writing to you as a concerned and patriotic Ethiopian, compelled by the enduring significance of our nation’s sovereignty and the unity of our people. This letter seeks to bring to your esteemed attention the matter of the Asseb port, a territory of profound historical, economic, and strategic value to Ethiopia.

As you are well aware, the Asseb port has been a subject of contention and a symbol of lost potential for Ethiopia. Historically, Asseb served as a vital maritime gateway for Ethiopia, fostering trade and economic growth. The absence of direct access to Asseb in recent years has significantly hampered our nation's economic development and regional influence.

The reintegration of the Asseb port into Ethiopian territory is not merely a matter of national pride but a crucial step towards securing our economic sovereignty and enhancing our regional standing. The strategic importance of Asseb cannot be overstated, offering Ethiopia a direct outlet to the sea, which is indispensable for our trade, investment, and overall economic expansion.

I urge your government to prioritize diplomatic efforts and negotiations aimed at the peaceful reintegration of the Asseb port into Ethiopia. Such a move would not only correct a historical anomaly but also signal to the world our commitment to national development, unity, and prosperity.

I trust in your leadership and vision for an Ethiopia that secures its rightful place on the global stage, leveraging all its resources, including strategic assets like the Asseb port. I believe that under your guidance, Ethiopia can navigate the complexities of this issue with wisdom and foresight.

It is not a simple fight between the 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬. It is not merely a civil war. This is an external war for dominant power in the region.

Ethiopia is rising. Its economy is growing. Its influence is expanding. 𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭. So Egypt backs the rebels fighting against the Ethiopian state. This is the truth. 𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝. It played a major role in Eritrea’s independence, stripping Ethiopia of its Red Sea access through Assab. That was no accident. It was a calculated move. Egypt has always pursued its national interests and security in East Africa by ensuring Ethiopia’s economy stays constrained. Ethiopia has paid a heavy price for being locked away from the sea. Most Ethiopians, and the current government, know Assab was taken through conspiracy involving Egypt. That belief is grounded in history.

Egypt does not seek mutual benefit with Ethiopia. It chooses proxy war and destabilization instead. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐥𝐞. 𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐄𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐭’𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. Ethiopia refused. Dr. Abiy Ahmed has repeatedly and firmly rejected those demands. Just yesterday, Egypt hosted an economic forum involving Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 building alliances and even military bases among Ethiopia’s neighbors to contain its rise.

Eritrea was illegally separated from Ethiopia. Isaias was never elected by Eritreans, and Eritreans never voted for independence. Egypt orchestrated the whole thing.
Egyptians still cling to a delusional “historical right” to control the Blue Nile inside Ethiopia. Ethiopians correctly see Egypt as a historical enemy. So whose version of history is supposed to rule?
The solution is simple: sit down, talk, and reach an agreement based on mutual benefit not threats, not demands, not force.
