Estoy dando seguimiento al arresto en España de Fergie Chambers, quien ha apoyado la defensa de los derechos humanos, incluyendo apoyo a proyectos humanitarios en Gaza. Según la información recibida, enfrenta un proceso de extradición a Estados Unidos sin haber tenido acceso pleno a la información sobre el proceso en su contra.
La solidaridad internacional y la defensa de los derechos humanos no deben ser criminalizadas. Insto al Estado español a garantizar todas las garantías del debido proceso y la protección internacional y tras la revisión judicial del caso, que proceda a no conceder la extradición, en cumplimiento de sus obligaciones internacionales inderogables.
Extraditar a un reconocido defensor de derechos humanos por actos vinculados a su labor legítima sentaría un precedente negativo y contravendría el deber de protección internacional, ya que existen serias preocupaciones y un riesgo real de que en el país requirente sea sometido a violaciones irreparables de sus derechos humanos, incluyendo la falta de garantías a un debido proceso y la criminalización del ejercicio de su derecho a defender derechos humanos.
