New York's prison agency is cracking down on incarcerated people's journalism and art. New rules ban:
- depicting prisons in a way that could "jeopardize safety or security";
- mentioning their crime;
- getting paid for their work;
- and more.

NEW: A new policy blocks incarcerated people from publishing journalism, writing, and art without permission - and forbids them from getting paid.
All depictions of police or prisons "in a manner which could jeopardize safety or security" are now banned.

There is not a single person whose incarceration sentence includes depriving them of fresh produce. But DOCCS imposes extrajudicial punishment like this, refusing to even allow family members to send fruits or vegetables to their loved ones like they used to be able to do.
Great piece from Freddy Medina, who is now home from prison and reporting! For @nysfocus, he examines how rising commissary prices, stagnant wages and a package ban are making basic items in NYS prisons inaccessible.

Solid work from Freddy Medina here. Too often, writers with firsthand prison experience are relegated to opinion pages, as if their conviction status somehow strips them of their expertise. Proud that @nysfocus is publishing previously incarcerated writers as reporters.
New York prisons banned packages mailed from home. Now, skyrocketing food prices and stagnant wages make basic nutrition inaccessible.
“To put it plainly," said the Correctional Association's Sumeet Sharma, "people in the prisons are hungry.”
