These talking points defining the working class as anybody who “works” have been circulating in DSA group chats, where they’ve found fertile ground among the overeducated and underemployed.

Historically, nearly all “workers’” revolutions were started by students and upwardly mobile intellectuals frustrated they weren’t getting their perceived share fast enough.

This time is no different.

Expanding the definition is an old trick. The vanguard concept is educated elites convincing workers they have solutions never before tried, and that both groups are on the same team, harmed by the same upper class.

The Bolsheviks were the template: Lenin was a lawyer, Trotsky a journalist, Bukharin an economist. Factory workers were the audience, not the authors.

The Khmer Rouge leadership drafted their “peasant revolution” as students in Paris cafes, then went home and started a genocide that killed 2 million people.

They also literally cosplay as the working class. The Russian Narodniks of the late 1800s were the most overt example. The Weather Underground gave it an American update: children of affluent professionals from elite universities declaring themselves the vanguard of a working class that wanted nothing to do with them. Today you don’t have to look hard on social media to find their heirs.

I’ve engaged in a lot of arguments about rent and rent control and landlords over the years and the main takeaway is that leftists aren’t interested in having an argument, really — it’s just naked contempt. That hate landlords. They hate business owners.

They don’t understand them, identify with them. They don’t see anything from their point of view.

And they have no interest in trying.

The thing that they really want to say is simply, “I hate you and I don’t care about what happens to you. If bad things happened to you, that would be fine.”
