The moment you understand why Dostoevsky titled his novel "The Idiot" is the moment you understand how society often treats genuine goodness: as foolishness or naivety to be trampled on.

In a world that prizes cunning, self-interest and status, a person who is purely kind and honest, like Prince Myshkin, is easily dismissed as an 'idiot'. His so-called idiocy is not a lack of intelligence. It is the strength of his moral principles, which the world around him cannot recognize or value.

The same patterns still hold today. Where ambition, power and self-interest are glorified, kindness is made to look like weakness. People who refuse to treat every relationship as a transaction are called naive. Those who choose honesty over manipulation are called foolish. Those who love deeply, without agenda, are told they are 'too much'.

Dostoevsky reminds us that true goodness is not ignorance. It is courage: the courage to stay kind in a cold cruel world, to remain gentle where life has hardened others and to believe in decency when deceit would be the easier path. That is strength, not stupidity.

Never let the world convince you that our kindness is a flaw. It needs more hearts like ours, brave enough to stay open in the face of cynicism. :)
