My feed this evening seemed to exist in two parallel worlds.
In the Ukrainian one, there were photos of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra engulfed in flames.
In the American one, there were cage fights on the White House grounds celebrating Donald Trump’s birthday and U.S. Flag Day.
Take a guess which event will make the front pages of American media tomorrow. Which videos will dominate social media feeds. What Americans will be talking about first and foremost, regardless of their political affiliation.
russia did not launch a massive ballistic missile attack on Kyiv by accident on this particular night. The Kremlin understood perfectly well that Washington would be preoccupied with celebrations and that media attention would be focused elsewhere. The spectacle on the White House lawn overshadowed even reports that the United States had reached a peace agreement with Iran, at least for one evening. On American Twitter, one of the most discussed moments right now is a fighter claiming live on stage that Michelle Obama is a man.
Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine are trying to break through the noise with photos and videos from Kyiv, but algorithms favor spectacle over tragedy.
Special thanks to the members of Congress, diplomats, religious leaders, and journalists who have shared these images and stories. Because of them, what happened in Kyiv still has a chance to appear in American feeds as well.

A young woman from Germany vanished without a trace 11 years ago. Now, her name makes several appearances in the Epstein files. Her family wants to finally learn what happened to her. https://t.co/cwnleksESl
Mark Carney just received 2 standing ovations, at Trinty College Dublin. It appears he's as loved in Ireland as he is in Canada. Thank you & a shout out to our Celtic cousins, for such a warm Irish welcome! 🍁❤️☘️
Justin Trudeau is living his best life and miserable unhappy CHUD Conservatives just cannot handle it.
God I am so happy I stay far away from these miserable CONS.
What a bunch of whining losers. Get a fucking life basement dwellers.
Our warriors have achieved good results in applying long-range sanctions against important facilities on the territory of Russia and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
More than 700 kilometers from our state border, in Russia’s Yaroslavl region, SSU warriors struck an oil facility that was important for the reserves of the aggressor state.
Warriors of our army reached their targets in Russia’s Tula region – specifically, the Azot plant, whose operations are critical to explosives production capabilities.
Air traffic restrictions were imposed at six Russian airports, and overall, since yesterday evening, 28 regions of Russia have been under air raid alerts.
There were also hits on the occupier’s military logistics in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.
Ukraine is carrying out its plan of long-range sanctions against Russia and the assigned tasks regarding mid-range strikes in response to Russia’s refusal to end this war. We have offered the Russian leadership every possible format for negotiations – and the only response was continued aggression and attempts to expand it. It stands to reason that the war is coming back to where it came from. Ukraine needs peace. Glory to Ukraine!
Remember when @ABDanielleSmith suggested we feed tainted meat to the homeless? The health inspectors she's trying to get rid of probably remember. #ableg
The UCP has $100m for a referendum, has billions for chartered schools and chartered surgical facilities. But is forcing a pay cut in the middle of an affordability crisis in Alberta.
Cruel and callous.
