Humbled and honored tonight to return from whence I came @SHSPrincipalGKs (Sterling High School, class of 1985) to be recognized for my life's achievements and inducted into the 'Alumni Hall of Fame' at my high school is a surreal experience. It's profoundly sobering to realize that 41 years have passed since I last walked those halls this June. I'm thrilled to join the class of 2026 at the Senior Dinner on and the awards ceremony that follows. I look forward to sharing my heartfelt remarks, gifting some of my new books, and offering some timeless wisdom that I wish someone had shared with me when I was 17 and graduating in 1985. Thank you Sterling Knights Sterling High School.

"My parents are fallible goofballs like anyone else. But there is something a bit different about the conversations at my dinner table—and something magical and rare about the people leading them."
James Garfield could write a sentence in Greek with his left hand while writing the same sentence in Latin with his right.
At the same time.
Before politics, he was a classics professor. Spoke seven languages. Read theology, philosophy, and mathematics for fun.
Four months into his presidency, he was shot.
The smartest man to ever hold the office.

For more than a century, one of Washington's best-kept secrets lay beneath the Lincoln Memorial: the Undercroft, a soaring 50,000-square-foot foundation built to keep the landmark from sinking into D.C.'s swampy ground.
Beginning in June, the public will be able to visit the space, now with a museum tracing the memorial's history, from its construction to its role as a powerful stage for the civil rights movement. https://t.co/MbuiPK7DU1
🇺🇸 Lincoln Memorial architect Henry Bacon deliberately chose stones from across the nation.
He wanted to symbolize national unity for the man who saved the Union.
• Massachusetts granite for the terrace walls and lower steps
• Colorado Yule marble for the entire exterior facade, upper steps, and 36 Doric columns (36 states when Lincoln died)
• Indiana limestone for the interior walls and columns of the central chamber
• Tennessee pink marble for the floor of the chamber
• Alabama marble for the ceiling tiles
• Georgia marble for the 19-foot seated statue of Lincoln
National unity was popular 100 years ago 🇺🇸
In June 1775, 17 year old James Monroe, a student at William and Mary joined roughly 25 revolutionaries and raided the abandoned British Governor's Palace in Williamsburg. They seized around 200 muskets and 300 swords, then handed them over to the Virginia militia to fight the Redcoats.
The future 5th President started his career as an arms raiding revolutionary, as one does
🇺🇸 There is a statue of George Washington in London.
It stands on US soil.
We shipped Virginia dirt from home so Washington never has to stand on British ground again.
Our 1st President, America! 🫡🇺🇸
