📍 Mekoni, Southern Tigray — In a shocking escalation of internal repression, Tigray’s security forces—backed by the TPLF-led interim administration—opened fire on peaceful residents in Mekoni today, killing at least one and wounding several others. The protesters were resisting an attempt by the interim government, under General Tadesse Werede, to impose administrative control over the Southern Zone—an effort the local population strongly opposed.

What began as a quiet standoff over local autonomy has now exposed a deeper truth: the people of Southern Tigray are shedding the fear that once silenced them. Residents swiftly took to the streets in defiance, condemning the use of lethal force and denouncing both the army and the TPLF’s political overreach. Their chants echoed a collective frustration—one that has been simmering beneath the surface in post-war Tigray, where promises of justice, self-rule, and peace have yet to be realized.

This crackdown comes amid growing signs of a grassroots civil awakening. Historically, civil resistance in Tigray has been limited—muted by war, trauma, and fear. But the Mekoni protest, bold and emotionally charged, signals a seismic shift. A fundamental political line may have been crossed.

There was a war in Ethiopia's Tigray region from 2020 - 2022. It was one of the most egregiously under-reported conflicts in modern history. Yes, there was a comms blackout. Yes, access was difficult. But I think racism also played a part. Just another African war. Who cares?
