Yesterday, Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook gave a crucial update on his Leasehold and Commonhold Bill.
In a speech and subsequent interview with @theipaper, the minister went into detail on measures in the forthcoming legislation:
- Said "abolishing" leasehold overnight is not the right approach and instead...
- Outlined his plan to cap ground rents at £250 by as soon as 2028
- And explained the plan phase in commonhold homeownership to bring Britain in line with other countries, where this is the default ownership structure for residential blocks
- And finally, bring in an outright ban on new leasehold flats (as has already happened with new houses)...
