The term “Black people” was created for our ancestors who were brought over here in chains. After slavery, civil rights leaders like Jesse Jackson coined “African-American” because they wanted to add some form a cultural integrity. Black Americans are those who descended from a black slave. Black does not define everyone who’s our color and even other cultures will tell you specifically to not call them black.

Foundational Black Americans who have a history of slavery, redlining, Jim Crow, war on drugs, mass incarceration, Tulsa Oklahoma, Oakwood, etc gets offended when those look to affiliate with our history for votes from us. That’s where the debate comes from because we still are living with the effects of our history while those who may be our color gets selected to represent us but don’t represent our interests.
