Load a 1TB external SSD with everything you might want access to when the internet is down. Books, PDFs, how-to guides, medical references, repair manuals, homestead guides, wilderness first aid, foraging books, gardening resources, family photos, important documents, videos, entertainment. Whatever fits your life.

Then drop it in a faraday bag with a laptop or old tablet loaded with the software to read it.

A few things worth knowing:

Cross platform compatible SSDs work on Mac, PC, and phones with the right adapter. Set it up once and it works across whatever device survives.

A 1TB drive holds tens of thousands of books in PDF format, hundreds of hours of video, and still leaves room for family photos and documents.

Project Gutenberg has thousands of free public domain books. Kiwix lets you download entire offline versions of Wikipedia, Khan Academy, medical references, and more. Both are goldmines for building a knowledge library.

Faraday protection matters if you're worried about EMP or targeted electromagnetic interference. Just make sure the bag actually blocks signal (test it by putting a phone inside and calling it).

Store the SSD in a cool dry spot in the faraday bag. SSDs are more durable than hard drives but they still don't love extreme heat or humidity long term.

A backup brain in a bag. Cheap insurance for a scenario where the internet you rely on daily isn't there.

X is paying 6% on deposits it can park risk-free at about 4.5%. That 1.5-point gap is the cheapest customer-acquisition channel in fintech history.

Run it on a $10,000 balance. The spread X hands back is roughly $150 a year to own that deposit. SoFi pays around $350 to acquire one banking customer once you stack the referral bonus and the direct-deposit incentive. Chime's lands under $100, and that buys a paycheck-to-paycheck user it has to upsell into loans to earn anything. X is picking up a primary banking relationship for ~$150 a year, from a user it already reaches for free.

Legacy banks run the opposite trade. They pay you under 1%, earn about 4.5% on your money, and pocket the difference. US banks pulled roughly $485B a year out of that gap. No bank will ever invert it, because the spread is the only product it sells.

X can invert it for one reason. The deposit is a wedge into your financial life, and the wedge is worth more than the spread. Once your paycheck, your card, and your P2P transfers live inside the app, lifetime value stops being 1.5% of a balance. It turns into interchange on every swipe, Premium upgrades, creator payouts, the marketplace, and ads served to a logged-in financial user. The 6% buys the relationship. Everything downstream pays for it.

The $10M FDIC number runs on a cash sweep. Your balance gets parceled across 40+ partner banks, each holding under the $250K federal ceiling, with Cross River as the anchor. Fidelity and Mercury have used this exact plumbing for years. Elon is the first to bolt it onto a feed with 600 million people already on it.

That distribution is the whole game. Every neobank spent a decade and hundreds of millions buying an audience. X started with one and is renting it back to itself for 1.5 points a year.
