Er passeren regelmatig tweets die de ene of de andere nieuwe belasting aanklagen. Ikzelf doe daar ook aan mee, bv. over erfbelasting of zelfs sommige boetes die imo. eigenlijk verkapte belastingen zijn.

We leven in een van de allerduurste landen wat belastingen betreft.
Een land waar je bovenop die belastingen dan nog eens extra moet betalen voor veel diensten die door die hoge belastingen zouden moeten gedekt zijn.
Denk maar aan huisvuil ophaling, of de aanvraag van een paspoort, parkeren in de stad, enz, enz.

Een groeiende weerstand tegen nieuwe belastingen is dan ook begrijpelijk.
Maar tegelijk is er ook de bedenking dat het probleem niet die ene nieuwe belasting is.

Het probleem is dat er een alsmaar groter wordende politieke en administratieve klasse is opgebouwd die onderhouden/betaald moet worden.
Ministers, kabinetten, administraties, agentschappen, adviesraden, subsidiestromen, overheidsbedrijven, lobbygroepen, consultants, communicatiediensten, Europese instellingen…elk jaar komt er wel iets bij, maar nooit iets af.

En al die structuren hebben één ding gemeen: ze kosten geld. Veel geld. Altijd maar meer.

Daardoor ontstaat een cyclus die zichzelf voedt: meer overheid vraagt meer inkomsten, meer inkomsten vragen meer belastingen, meer belastingen remmen economische groei, waardoor opnieuw meer belastingen nodig lijken -de Laffer curve ten spijt.

Denken dat het probleem opgelost raakt door één specifieke belasting af te schaffen, bestrijdt een symptoom maar niet de oorzaak.
Want zolang de machine blijft groeien, zal ook de factuur blijven groeien.

De vraag is dus niet welke belasting weg moet.
—> De vraag is hoeveel overheid een samenleving eigenlijk nodig heeft en hoeveel ze bereid is daarvoor te betalen?

Een slotbedenking nog: moesten al die belastingen zorgen voor een perfecte infrastructuur met bv minder files of putten in de weg, voor een schitterende gezondheidszorg zonder patiëntenstop of maandenlange wachttijden, voor onderwijs van hoge kwaliteit en zonder kamperende ouders om hun kind toch maar ingeschreven te krijgen…dan zou er wellicht aanzienlijk minder frustratie zijn.

Maar vandaag leven we in een land met aan de ene kant continu stijgende belastingen waarvoor we aan de andere kant steeds minder voor in de plaats wordt gegeven.
En dat patroon kan niet anders dan vroeg of laat zuur opbreken vrees ik. En dan heb ik het niet alleen over menselijke- en financiële kapitaalvlucht.
