In 2022, I had an off-the-record meeting with NATO officials in Brussels.
They were eager to learn more about the nature of the Ukrainian volunteer movement, and I was very interested in why Western aid was so slow and had to go through the millstones of total bureaucracy.

At the time, I heard a seemingly understandable answer. They said the decision-making protocols had been perfected in developed democracies for decades to avoid corruption, wrong-doings or other risks, and no one would change the rules of the game for Ukraine, even during the war. Therefore, we need to learn to speak the same language with NATO and the Western bureaucracy.
Back then, it looked like a kind of action plan. Well, they are NATO, they probably know better.

Two years have passed...
And I am witnessing how these unshakable and decades-old cemented protocols of the world's humanitarian and security institutions have revealed themselves to be a colossus with feet of clay.
Almost each and every one of them has already proved their total impotence.

The United Nations that should have been dissolved long ago, after Rwanda. The UN that is incapable of doing anything but being a platform for nothing else than verbal sparring.

If the UN had once been excluded from the quartet that negotiated the grain corridor, the corridor would still have been agreed upon. If Turkey had been excluded, they would still be negotiating to this day.

The Red Cross has a luxurious office in Geneva, nice cars and absolutely zero influence on Russia in matters of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Over all these years, it has been easier not to break the old protocols rather than develop new ones.

The same story goes with the International Atomic Energy Agency as well as the International Criminal Court, who could have predicted that one day Putin would visit one of the countries that are parties to the Rome Statute and would not be arrested there.

And finally, NATO officials should understand a simple thing: one day, your organization will be triggered to finally use Article 5!

I remember that at that meeting at NATO, I said that the main advantage of Ukrainian volunteers is the mobility of decision-making and logistics.

We do not waste time looking for political will to do something that will save the lives of our military or civilians. We just go on and do it. Very often, we are ahead of the curve.
In June, Berlin hosted another forum on the restoration of Ukraine.

And we could have loudly welcomed all the initiatives of our international partners in the current or post-war process of rebuilding Ukrainian cities and villages, our critical infrastructure if all of it was synchronized with the prevention of further destruction that Russia keeps carrying out in Ukraine.

It's great that Poland is ready to help rebuild the houses in Lviv damaged by the Russians.
It is not clear, though, what fear of escalation the partners are talking about when they fly Polish F-16s to observe the missile and shahed drone attacks from across the border. What exactly will Russia do to Poland if the latter shoots down a missile that is supposed to hit Yavoriv?

Why is the US afraid to give the go-ahead to long-range missile strikes at military targets in Russia after our troops have taken a part of the Kursk region?
