Most people have seen the viral Pew Research poll that shows young men are single at DOUBLE the rate of young women. This is a troubling statistic and I have some working theories about what is driving this surprising change and what can be done about it. Short 🧵:

The number of townhomes and luxury apartments popping up all with $800k price tags is shocking to me. The next step being the small tract HOA’s where no one can even build a fence for their awkward lot, which is an equally baffling option. It’s all expensive and completely tasteless. My only theory is most people actually prefer not to go outside at all.

Yeah well that “path of least resistance” attitude you are ascribing, coupled with absolute refusal to consider better alternatives, is what has driven multiple civilization-level crises of our time. It seems like your heart is in the right place but I don’t think it’s going to lead to a better society in any way.

I think most people would agree that there is a fundamental difference between the concepts of justice, consequence, and solution. In my opinion the distinction is clear and this is not a trivial semantic argument. This is a person that committed an act of unforgivable evil and now the “consequence” is infinity compassion from the state for the murderer, which also denies the family of the victim any closure or peace through criminal conviction and punishment. And as for the “solution” you now have an unreleasable burden for the taxpayer to deal with for the rest of his life (possibly 6 more DECADES). I could drone on about why that is completely fucking insane and unfair to the people of Germany, but I think that gets into the territory of the unbridgeable gap between sane and neoliberal worldviews.

I do not know whether that is the case so I would be willing to modify my position in that regard. Thank you for sharing that information. However, at the end of the day this is a person who committed an act of terrible evil. It is my opinion that justice is NOT served in this instance.

I didn’t even remotely suggest that. And regardless of the quality of care, he is now going to be treated as someone suffering from mental illness, not as a child murderer. He will be treated the same as the honest and innocent people who tragically suffer from mental illness and never harmed anyone but are still placed in the care of a psych ward. That is unfair to the fellow innocent patients, the victims and their families, and the medical care staff.

The article adds nothing significant that the article’s headline doesn’t mention. And you say he did not get away with it, but being sent to a mental institution isn’t a punishment, so I would say yes he did in fact get away with it. People who don’t murder toddlers also go mental institutions so make sure you aren’t filling in blank space on what is actually happening and assumed that he will be treated as an evil person when that is not the case.

I think having dogs is a really wonderful thing. It is a lot of responsibility and although dog ownership seems to be generally shit on because of “fur baby” types, my two dogs bring me so much joy. What else can you hope for in life

The sons face shows a state of disbelief and confusion about the pharmaceutically charged monster before them

The father has a split second to decide which way this will go. He transcends the physical material world and decides a ball is a ball, a small trinket is not worth an emotional investment

After all, there is a lower-dimensional Karen seemingly obsessed with such baubles, ready to risk her reputation and physical safety in front of a stadium of onlookers to achieve her goal.

This is really cool, thanks for sharing. I have the same feeling about hiring a cleaning service. Time saved and they (a crew of 5) do an excellent, professional job. It would take me 8 hours to do what they do in about 45 min (less than 4 man hours).

One question: does it really cost only $150 for an entire week to feed your family? Seems a bit low. Not a big deal since the value is clear, but my wife and I spend a lot more than that and we don’t have any kids yet.
