An Irish friend (and fan of games I worked on) told me that Irish is respected and loved and is of course still a legal language. He said that they had a politician (this was in the 90s) who when he was attacked in Parliament, would respond in a long torrent of pure Irish, and all the MPs would just sit back and smile and listen to the Irish, none of which they could understand. And that's how that politician got out of answering hard questions.
