A new study just dropped serious warnings about the cancer risks tied to CT scans, estimating they might be responsible for over 100,000 new cancer cases every year. Researchers from the US and UK found that the 93 million CT scans done in 2023 could lead to about 103,000 future cancers—roughly 5% of all U.S. cancer diagnoses.

Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study exposes how repeated radiation exposure adds up, especially for kids and older adults. The takeaway? Both doctors and patients need to stop treating CT scans like routine selfies and start asking whether they’re truly necessary—especially when the benefits aren’t clear.

CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis carried the highest risk, and while imaging tech is obviously a game-changer for diagnosing serious conditions, researchers are urging a smarter, more selective approach to avoid unnecessary radiation.

And honestly, this conversation extends to mammograms too. It’s time to keep exploring safer, more precise ways to screen and detect—because prevention shouldn’t come with collateral damage.
