The story of 2112
Picture this: it’s 1975, Rush are on the ropes. Their previous record, Caress of Steel, had bombed hard, the label was threatening to drop them, and the band was staring down the barrel of career death. Instead of playing it safe, the three young Canadians doubled down on pure ambition. They locked themselves away and built an entire 20-minute sci-fi rock opera called “2112” — a dystopian tale set in a future where music, art, and free thought have been outlawed by the cold, faceless Priests of the Temples of Syrinx. One ordinary guy stumbles into a cave, discovers an ancient guitar, and suddenly hears music for the first time in his life. The joy, the rebellion, the sheer power of creation — it’s all there. But the priests crush the dream, and the hero chooses to end it all rather than live without that spark. The whole thing was inspired by Ayn Rand’s short novel Anthem, but Rush turned it into an explosive prog-rock epic with laser-precise playing, massive dynamics, and a message about individuality that still hits like a power chord today. Released on April 1, 1976, 2112 didn’t just save the band — it launched them into the stratosphere. It became their first platinum album in the U.S., proved that prog could be commercial, and gave the world one of the most beloved concept pieces in rock history. The red star on the cover became their lifelong symbol, and the album remains the moment Rush went from cult favorite to legends. That cave, that guitar, that single act of defiance? It changed everything.
As a footnote to Physical Graffiti, I thought you might like to hear the original home demo, recorded in my studio at Plumpton Place of a piece of music that was going to surface as 10 Years Gone.
I presented this rough mix to the band at Headley Grange in order to do this for real. Robert Plant came up with some lyrics for my music that were extraordinary and then we arrive at the song 10 Years Gone.

“Beautiful People”… fue una de las canciones que cantó Melanie en Woodstock, y una de las consentidas de Tempus. Que tengas buen viaje a tu siguiente destino, acá nos quedamos con tus melodías y tu recuerdo. - RIP Melanie. 😔
