Proper funding will enable us to hire representatives in several prison facilities where we are building credible civic messengers and a replicable, self-sustaining process.

Equally as important we teach them how to start and have these conversations with their loved ones. Presently, in coalition with other organizations we aim to infuse a historical understanding of disenfranchisement into Hartford’s work and academic spaces (colleges).

A goal of this robust education campaign is to support our in-prison population. We inform residents/citizens of the communal and intergenerational ramifications of felony disenfranchisement.

We’re taking an even deeper dive into the community by meeting community members where they’re living their lives: barbershops, grocery stores, class rooms, religious services etc.

We have to engage year-round and in the same spaces and institutions where disenfranchisement has taken place. For this reason we are in prisons, schools, halfway houses, and living rooms.

The community must take and have ownership of the conversation if we are to own the process.

We are now engaged in community outreach, canvassing, and dispensing our research about the effects of felony disenfranchisement. Our focus is to grow voters by growing the concepts of “community harm through the lack of voting,” and “community equity through participation.”

It is not about the "why," but solely about the vote. Having restored voting rights to men & women on felony-parole we are--as we have been--following that by educating them about felony disenfranchisement.

In past years we were most active around election season, this year that changes. This year we aim to grow in what previously was our “off-season.”

The political machine in Connecticut dumps a lot of election-season-money between the months of May and November. This is to promote candidates as well as a robust turnout. However, this time period doesn't leave room for actual education because it is numbers-driven.

We are creating political and civic awareness in Hartford. The type of awareness that encourages and empowers Hartford’s residents/citizens to create their own equity: we are restoring the conversation of democracy back into the homes of our community.

FCC closed out the month of February with a two-day training event: A Hustler’s Curriculum to Organizing. This “organizing 101” was designed and facilitated by Formerly Incarcerated People and Family Member’s own Brittany White.

Brittany White guided us through training in How to Share Power, Building Power in Community, Defining Qualities & Strengths and How to Leave Our Last Win in The Past in Pursuit of Excellence.

Our office was filled for this training. While we hosted a number of people not affiliated with any organizations 30 system-impacted people sat in attendance.
