@donaldisco12705 I'll be honest, Duke is an eyesore from a basis standpoint, he's the only engine there who's from a different railway. I love his character, design and *almost* everything about him, but I'm no mongrel to ignore what the execution of his concept meant here.
@NKSchwarzwalder erasing Nia's livery or Gators heritage is one thing, but surely that is an entirely different action and intent than seeing a deeply fascinating event (such as an elephant in a tunnel or a runaway chase in America) and using it to inspire your own work. Surely.
@NKSchwarzwalder All Anglocentrist work for centuries has portrayed other cultures purely. This is inarguable. Even Victor (a character who i love and you seem to respect in your other threads [which are great reads]) was voiced by some white guy for years but there is a difference between -
@NKSchwarzwalder Look, I am don't mean to be rude but you literally compared it to Henry's Sneeze. I think we can all agree that this moment is one of the most blatant displays of racism and hate ever attached to the brand. I think it was fair play

Tbf I really don't care about the “purists” in the Fandom, I used to be one myself before I discovered my own niche; however, I do care about people reproducing colonial rhetoric and masking it under their “passion for the work”.
Do I need to mention Duke and Henry's Sneeze?
Can we all take a deep breath and use our brains when spouting nonsense. I am all for an analytical, critical view of things made over 50 years ago. But by no means is Duke's story being inspired by something in Brazil racist or dated. Are you insane? Should Edward be American
The engines are engines. If you approach them as anything else they become shallow and worthless tropes more than anything and this disconnect splits not only a Good Thomas story from Garbage, but the understanding of fans to the Le Epic Tunnel people
Speaks to a fundamental misunderstanding of the series a lot of people (esp younger ppl who approach this as a Fandom™️ first and a passion project of 1 man second) the engines are not People. They do not think or have the morals of People. If you write like they do, you failed.
Suffering as duty is probably the most intrinsic trope problem in TTTE since these trains are gonna be run if they can be no matter what, and it has created an island of workaholic martyrs ready to die for a cause they both gain their life force from yet never voluntarily joined
@TheRedJinty@CentralAboy I think conceptually its very inspired! I love how much passion and love went into it. Its concept art is amazing! But such a massive quarry being tacked on to the very small scale skarloey has always felt incredibly forced
@Eddache_ Passion alive for future generations, and how working on real life rail operations directly fed into the stories he wrote. Not to mention how his books brought such large swaths of people and attention to these places. Its arguably the biggest achievement of his work!
@Eddache_ the show is far superior to the original books due to impact and reach, how awdry is a cynical rude perfectionist who looks down on everyone else to touch is work, only to not once mention how much good he did for railway preservation, how his time volunteering to keep his
