A Karnataka court has sentenced three men to death for the gang-rape of an Israeli tourist and the murder of Odisha native Bibhas Kumar Nayak near Hampi in March 2025, describing the crime as among the "rarest of rare."

Bibhas Nayak, a resident of Kandhamal district, was attacked while trying to protect two women from assault near Sanapura Lake in Koppal district. He was struck with a stone and thrown into a canal, where he drowned.

The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Gangavathi convicted the accused earlier this month and pronounced the death sentence today. The sentence is subject to confirmation by the High Court.
