Unpopular opinion, brace yourselves.
Before I state what it is, let me be clear: I believe a lot of things are great in moderation, but can be detrimental if unchecked. This particular take is no different.
So what is it?
The notion of building in public has ruined the potential of many founders in Web3 and delayed a lot of business being initiated.
Now, I donโt think founders are all to blame. And I donโt think the community is all to blame either. Both play a part.
The community puts pressure on founders to be โactiveโ which, letโs be real, just means yapping nonsense on Twitter most of the time.
And on the other side of the coin, founders tend to fall into this trap and succumb to this pressure, prioritizing social engagement over actual development.
Iโve been that founder before. If you have been following me since ~2020, you know I was on every space, posting 100 replies and 30 tweets per day and spending countless hours in Discord.
But luckily, I took a step back and made some changes before it was too late, as that type of shit wasn't going to get my tech built or help my clients.
Do I get flack from the community from time to time for doing this? Yes. Do I think a lot of founders could benefit from doing the same? Also yes.
Why do I say this?
Because I have so many deals in motion that simply havenโt been launched because founders are slow as shit to reply to things that move the needle forward.
Meanwhile, theyโre posting 69 gmโs/day and in spaces at 3am. Itโs a blatant disregard for REAL value creation that the community simply canโt see, as it occurs behind closed doors.
You'd be surprised how many of your favorite founders take a week (or more) to reply to an email that could bring value to their company and community. And I'm not talking about emails that take days to process and formulate responses to. I'm talking about things that could be taken care of in minutes.
You'd be equally surprised at how many meetings get cancelled last minute, or worse, no-showed by the supposed 'greats' of Web3.
Sure, your favorite founder has a grip on the attention economy of anonymous degenerates and that may pump your jpegs, but how long will that last when nothing tangible is being made due to prioritizing vaporware over contracts and business deals?
Itโs infuriating, but again, I donโt fully blame them. The community can be rabid sometimes and I get it.
The obsession with social currency and baseless hype has plagued this ecosystem for the worse.
It's time for a reality check in the space. Real progress needs real work, not just social media noise.
Damn @MorganStoneee absolutely loving Aus. Yet to see a Roo but Iโm sure we will today ๐
Where abouts are the tree Roos @RooTroopNFT donated too so I can see if Iโm going past or near to pop in
Seriously 4 shots and 3 goals on HUT. @EASPORTS you got to fix this itโs absolutely insane. Oh and the 2 penalties he scored on were penalties from AI ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
@British_Airways I am so frustrated with you guys itโs unbelievable. Recently married and my wife is unable to change her surname for exec club because of your awful forms that rejects it every time. We have tried ringing, sent in complaints. We are 8 weeks in and still no joy.
@British_Airways The worst thing is American Express is holding like 20k avios because changing your surname on a credit card is easier then with a BA exec account and because the names donโt match we canโt transfer which means we canโt book our flights without them ๐ก
@British_Airways She doesnโt use Twitter. But maybe your contact methods should work and I should have to use socials to get in touch. Can we private message Iโll give you her mobile number to arrange?
It's a new week, which means new opportunities are ahead!
