Hot take:

Sandy’s death opening the movie is more than just a tragedy. It shows how Bear would treat Nikki down the line. He lost his pet through neglect—he knew the shelves with the pills were flimsy, the food was lying around, and did nothing. I feel like he does the same with Nikki: he gets someone who “loves him more than anyone” and then doesn’t care for her.

When Nikki is clearly struggling, he does Nothing. No meds, no hospital, nothing. Instead, he’s always thinking about himself: “Nikki, you’re scaring me.” “Nikki, you can’t do this.” But never, “Nikki, are you okay?” or “Are you hurt?”
