TLDR: This movie is shit as a standalone movie, and is an ABSOLUTE WAR CRIME against the source material. It butchers everything that made the game a masterpiece, and even does a shit job of just doing it's own thing too.

I HATE how the identities of important characters (not the main cast bc they're obv not even the same ppl) were completely butchered. The psycho is just a fucking mindless killer, and the Wendigo are just glorified zombies. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW SHIT THIS MOVIE IS.

I'm appaled that Sony let this movie happen because it's such a disgrace to the game. I hope everyone who hasn't given the game a chance but hated the movie does play the game because I'd feel so sad if THIS is someone's first and last impression of the IP

I spent the entire movie getting pissed off at every reference to the game that they added to the movie for fans of the game because that's clearly NOT who the movie is for, given it's complete bastardisation of what made the game such a classic.

but in this movie? None of that matters. The Wendigo? They just kinda appear. The psycho? He's just a psycho, nothing more to it. It's honestly a war crime againt the original game's great story and compelling writing. None of the twists and turns of the game are here...

BUT THE MOST INFURIATING PART WAS HOW THEY COMPLETELY RUINED SO MUCH OF WHAT MADE THE GAME AMAZING. The twist of Josh being the psycho, the chaos that then ensued and the build up to the reveal of the wendigos was one of the best things about the original game-

The characters in the game were kind of cringe and awkward, but in a very charming way. The characters in the movie are just dumb as shit and act in infuriatingly annoying ways. I also thought that the movie was just not scary, like, at all.

It feels like the director was told about the elements of the game and decided to make his own story and shove them in it somehow. For one, WHY IS THIS A TIME LOOP MOVIE??? THAT WAS NEVER A THING IN THE GAME??? It's a cheap way to incorporate the "choices" from the game.

The movie itself is also just not faithful to the story, like, at all basically. It tells it's own story with it's own characters that's loosely tied to the game's story and makes references to the game to play it off as another story in the same universe? I think?

To start things off, I don't understand why this movie was even made. The original game is basically an interactive movie to begin with, so why bother making an inferior version of it where you don't have any control over the outcome?

As a die-hard fan of the game, I had already tempered my expectations given that this was a movie adaptation of a video game (a historically dogshit formula) but BOY was I still heavily disappointed...

I haven't played online yet, so I won't speak on that. I'm currently trying to platinum the game, so I will eventually have to play online too, so we'll see how that goes.

Overall, I've genuinely really enjoyed my time with this game :)

The art style of the game is pretty charming. I really respect Criterion for trying something different with the visual style of the game. I remember so many people (especially content creators) bashing this game's effects and cell-shaded characters when it came out.

The cops are pretty good. In NFS Heat, reaching heat level 5 genuinely felt like receiving a death sentence. The police in that game were genuinely scary (which I kinda miss tbh). They're much tamer in this game at heat level 5, but they're still a good challenge.
