When I led PM teams, I often had to help PMs frustrated by a lack of alignment with PMs in other orgs.
Sometimes, I’d suggest a simple fix: send an engineer or a designer to talk to the other team instead. Worked like magic.
PM-to-PM ego is a problem that no one talks about, but it is common in top companies.
In fact, product managers are often most difficult with each other.
Progress often stalls not because of complexity, but because each PM is too busy trying to prove they’re the smartest in the room.
A lesson I have learned the hard way: Don’t hire Executives from big companies
An Executive in a $50M company is very different from an Executive in a $1B+ company.
The right Executive for this stage is comfortable doing the job & managing the job.
Many BigCo folks say they want to "be entrepreneurial"; in reality, they don't.
Running a company:
2020: can you survive a pandemic?
2021: still here? we’re going to give all of your competitors $100m series A rounds.
2022: wow, you made it? okay, all engineers cost $600,000/year now.
2023: nice job! okay, we’re going to take away your bank account.
When you are gifted in product sense & strategy, a huge downside is that you can often come across as irritated & condescending when a proposal is presented to you. Yes, you can see things no one else can. But, it is vital as a leader to recognize this huge downside & correct it.

In B2B, teams fall into the trap of building a new product, expecting that it will be adopted by happy customers of their existing mature product. Better to be cautious if the buyer of your new product is a different function / department than the buyer of your existing product.

When you are asked to work on a new product initiative within a startup or a large company, probably the worst thing that could happen is that you are also given a whole team of engineers right away. Few understand this.
Former F1 World Champion Nelson Piquet called Lewis Hamilton the N-word in an interview.
Nothing needs to be said about Lewis—he's a 7x World Champion & an incredible ambassador for the sport.
But the response should be simple: Ban Nelson Piquet from all F1 races & events.

Most product people pay attention to well-built products that are highly successful. That is natural.
But many product people miss that there’s also a lot to be learned from sub-par products that are nonetheless highly successful. It is quite smart to learn what they got right.
