@richard_effendi At that time, the JP translators, lacking an official interpretation, did their utmost to produce a translation that JP readers could enjoy, and I feel it’s difficult to compare the two, given their different production environments and the different expectations placed on them.
I'm Japanese. I’m not sure if this post will reach people overseas, but given the recent uproar over the official translation of UT, I feel that a misconception regarding the official JP translation has been spreading abroad. Therefore, I’d like to share my thoughts;
@413x1nkp@richard_effendi Oh! While this writing style isn’t quite as extreme as Spamton, it’s still pretty quirky. It uses small kana letters and half-width characters in ways that aren’t typical, making it look like the kind of internet slang you’d find on women’s message boards from decades years ago.
@richard_effendi In the chara's dialogue, kanji are used consistently, which makes it feel like the tone has shifted completely.
Kanji are also used in the dark world of Deltarune, and—again, this is just my opinion—it gives me the same sense of a shift in tone that I get from later SF games.
@richard_effendi I believe that for words where mispronunciation or misreading could easily occur—even when written in hiragana or katakana—kanji is used to the extent that it doesn’t disrupt the game’s canon lore (at least that’s my take on it).
@richard_effendi Hmm
I think opinions will vary on this, especially among those who are used to unofficial translations, and I haven’t fully grasped the tone of the EN version of UT myself. But if people overseas feel that UT has a similar tone to Earthbound, then I think this choice is spot-on.

lo mas gracioso de todo esto es que, por toda la polémica, la comunidad se puso a revisar la traducción oficial al japones de undertale y descubrieron que esta hecha con las patas
I realize that bringing this up for debate might be pointless, but I wanted to post this to clear up any misunderstandings regarding the quality of the official Japanese translation and Toby’s proficiency in Japanese.
Thank you for reading this far.
