My grandmother plays the same six lottery numbers every single week, has for thirty-one years, never changes them even after near misses, even after a machine glitch once gave her the wrong ticket entirely and she made the gas station reprint it exactly right.

I asked her once why those specific numbers, expecting birthdays or an anniversary.

She said, "They're not mine. They were my sister's. She played them for forty years before she passed and never won a dime. I took over the week of her funeral."

I didn't know she had a sister. Nobody in the family had ever mentioned her.

"We didn't speak the last nine years of her life," my grandmother said. "Stupid fight over our mother's house. I found her lottery slip in her coat pocket when I was going through her things and just started playing it myself. Didn't know what else to do with the guilt."

Thirty-one years, same six numbers, never once hit.

I asked if she'd ever consider switching, statistically improving her odds with random numbers instead.

She said, "It was never really about winning."

She still buys the ticket every Friday, same gas station, same six numbers, quietly finishing an apology that's outlived both women involved.
