"We can't do that because people think it's embarrassing and..."
Video games back then were considered embarrassing regardless of content. If Itagaki and the creators of other Koei Tecmo IPs thought like that, these current devs wouldn't even have a game company to work at.
Sega president says there's been a rise in "fans who don't play the games," and their engagement with IPs can be even higher than that of gamers

Crunchyroll has been looking to strengthen its fight against anime piracy since at least July, looking for a Vice President, Content Protection & Anti-Piracy.
The role calls for 15+ years of experience in content protection, anti-piracy, DRM, trust & safety, or IP enforcement, with senior leadership experience in global streaming, media, or entertainment.
Crunchyroll is seeking someone who can build and lead a global anti-piracy strategy, oversee investigations and enforcement operations, manage external partners, and work across Legal, Product, Engineering, Security, and Trust & Safety.
The position also requires deep knowledge of copyright law, DMCA processes, online piracy, and enforcement platforms such as YouTube Content ID, Meta Rights Manager, and Google TCRP. A major focus will be evaluating new technologies, including AI-enabled enforcement, while developing KPIs and analytics to measure effectiveness and business impact.
'THE GHOST IN THE SHELL' (2026) uses fictional names for several real-world countries referenced in Masamune Shirow's original manga
🇺🇸 United States → MAG Union
🇷🇺 USSR → Volgarena
🇮🇱 Israel → Ghorantl
🇸🇾 Syria → Mesamia
The changes are present in the Japanese version of the anime, and similar substitute fictionalized countries have appeared in previous GITS adaptations as well
Notably, the Latin American Spanish dub retains the original references, with dub director Daniel Lacy stating that the decision was made to stay faithful to the manga
