The Cameroonian government has taken ambitious measures to rehabilitate the national oil refinery, SONARA, in order to strengthen the country’s energy sovereignty.
During a meeting on Monday in Yaoundé, chaired by Finance Minister Louis Paul Motazé, measures were fine-tuned, including restoring national refining capacity, reducing dependence on petroleum product imports, strengthening Cameroon's energy security, optimising supply costs, and supporting the growth and competitiveness of the national economy.
Attended by investors, industrialists, financial institutions, and international experts, the government hopes to raise 700 billion FCFA for the project.
“This strategic step will gather market expectations and proposals to consolidate a viable, attractive, and sustainable project within the framework of a public-private partnership (PPP)," the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.
The Cameroon oil refinery was originally built to process heavy crude, which is not consumed in the country. As a result, the country must import light crude for domestic consumption.
Under the new plans, however, the government aims to rehabilitate and upgrade the facility so that it can refine both light and heavy crude.
The rehabilitation discussions come after the refinery was severely damaged by fire several years ago.
