There are going to be some new faces around the Winnipeg City Council table after this fall's election, and I think that's a good thing.
With Janice Lukes deciding not to run again, and John Orlikow also stepping away, there's finally going to be room for some fresh voices. Others are reportedly thinking about calling it a career too. To all of them, thank you for your service. Public office isn't easy, and they deserve our respect.
That said, every organization benefits from new ideas. City Hall is no different.
When I ran for council last time, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Get elected, work my ass off for a term or two, get some meaningful things done for my community, then step aside and let someone else have a crack at it.
I've never understood making politics a lifelong career. Too often, the job stops being about serving others, and starts being about keeping the job. That's when fresh thinking gets replaced by protecting the status quo.
Winnipeg has been wrestling with many of the same issues for years. Crime, homelessness, addiction...the list goes on. If the same people keep making the same decisions, why should we expect different results?
Experience has value. But so does a new set of eyes.
So if you've ever thought about running for city council, even for a minute, this might be your chance. It's very difficult to knock off an incumbent, but in at least two wards, that won't be an issue this time around. Winnipeg needs smart people who care enough to get involved.
These are difficult times and your city needs you.
This is probably a long shot but I need 20 to 50 stacking or folding chairs. Used is fine but they must be in good condition and all matching. Anyone? #Winnipeg#Manitoba

@TheFigen_@X Unfortunately, you have to realize X doesn’t care about you or anybody, all they care about is making money off the ads. They don’t really wanna pay out anybody when they can keep it all for themselves. That’s pretty obvious. Does anyone really think @elonmusk actually cares
