While visiting Weaver Cave Preserve recently, a staff member spotted this beautiful gray fox along the trail and snapped this photo before it quickly vanished back into the forest.
Gray foxes are opportunistic animals that eat everything from small mammals and insects to berries and thrive in hardwood forests like the one found around Weaver Cave. Unlike other canids like dogs and coyotes, they have hooked claws that make them excellent at climbing trees.

Beyond the creek, the property includes hardwood stands, working pine forests, and hay fields, offering a mix of habitat for a variety of wildlife.Β
Thank you to the landowner for choosing to permanently protect their property under a conservation easement with GALT!
This property includes approximately 1,500 feet of Little Armuchee Creek, part of a priority watershed within the Georgia State Wildlife Action Plan. Protecting the creek and the surrounding riparian area will reduce degradation and help keep this waterway healthy.
As seen here, they can be very social birds and often will hunt and nest in groups. If you spot a Mississippi Kite this summer, enjoy it while you can! Come fall they will make the long journey to South America for the winter and will not return to the U.S. until the spring.
Soaring over one of our protected properties in Sumter County, AL, one of stewards recently spotted this group of Mississippi Kites! These graceful raptors are expert aerial hunters snatching insects like dragonflies and cicadas right out of the air.
Thank you to all who visited Weaver Cave Preserve in June during our first month of Open Trail Days every weekend! We have been blown away by the visitors and support.
We're excited to share that we will continue our Open Trail Days every weekend in July! Stop by to explore the preserve on Saturdays and Sundays between 7AM to 6:30PM (weather permitting). Plan your visit here: https://t.co/EJpJyLHDKA
Last month, our staff came together for our annual staff meeting. Since we're mostly a remote team, this in-person gathering provides an opportunity for everyone to connect, share ideas, and strengthen the working relations that carry our conservation work forward.
Our stewardship team was even able to make an excursion to Dauphin Island to visit the Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary and the incredible Dauphin Island Sea Lab to learn about the important conservation work they do.
Registration for Wing Night will open on July 10th at 12 PM CT. Registration is free, but limited. Be sure to register early to secure your spot at Wing Night!
