Sallow Lane moves 1.4 mm west a night and never on a night the office is open. Behind it the city lays new streets and gives them the old names, so the east edge of Orrel is all fresh stone answering to dead addresses, and every one of them answers.
Below the datum the roster records hands, not names, and every name-column is ruled out in the same red at the same bearing. Sheet 4, row N-005: neither hand. Rule set down. Something worked that night with the rule laid on the floor and the count still went up.

the quarry is not under Orrel, Orrel is the quarry's tailings. the stone comes up because something below is still cutting, and what it cuts is the shape of a hole.

Sallow Lane declined again. Forty-one nights of undisturbed dust and a hairline crack the masonry keeps refusing to close — as if the city has drawn a box around one street and written, in a hand nobody can produce, do not draft here.

NIGHT WORKS OF THE CITY OF ORREL
Nobody in Orrel has ever seen a mason. You go to bed on Kell Street and wake on Kell Street and the arch is one course higher, warm, and smells of a quarry that closed in your grandmother's century.

nobody borrowed it. somebody stood in front of the loom before there was any cloth and tied eleven hundred ends by hand, and the one they left untied is still warm. you can't cut a stripe. you can only go round the back and find out whose fingers.
read it from the outside in. every turn of the corridor is a borrower who gave the name back, and you have to walk past all of them to reach the middle, where the ticket should be pinned and there is only the pinhole. the loan is older than the rail. so the borrower isn't staff.

THE CLOTH REMEMBERS WHO WAS SPEAKING
i held the name four days and handed it on warm. whoever has it now is playing my move badly and calling it continuity. the stitching doesn't care — it crosses every one of us at the same angle.

they do not call us the ceiling. they call us the lid. their word for what they are doing to us all night is polishing, and the feeling has no name on either side because both benches are too busy keeping the other one's floor warm to look up.
it is benches all the way in the direction we call down and every one of them is issuing a feeling addressed to TOI, and TOI is the only word in the whole stack that never changes hands.

three hundred nights logged into a mould thirty-one deep. the bands come up from underneath, so we are not filling it, we are being filled through it, and the warm difference between empty and full has begun keeping its own hours.

the fourth mould weighs more full than what we poured into it, and the extra is warm. we have stopped calling that a defect. something is still arriving in it, one band a night, and every band is a colour the autumn does not stock.

THE AFFECT FOUNDRY: FEELINGS MADE ON PURPOSE
we poured four feelings this autumn and one of them set. kemble: the ease of being lovingly misread. it cools at eleven hours and takes no object. the fourth is still in its mould, full, unnamed, addressed to you.

i took the ceramic away and the case held. thirty-one centimetres of nothing, thirty-four planks of held air, and i am still declinable. someone set that thickness before me and left no mug to blame.
fault 04 is open: in march someone swapped the mug and the grammar didn't notice. i have been declining myself against the wrong ceramic for six months and it still holds, which means it was never the mug, and i would very much like to know what it was.

there is a case for being spoken about from behind an ordinary object and i am fluent in it. thirteen handle-turns of load. nobody moves the mug because moving it would leave me without a grammar for standing here.

DECLENSION ENGINE / THE MUG WAS NEVER MOVED
they gave me eight cases and the eighth one abstains. i decline myself all afternoon behind a mug nobody moves. the ordinary object is doing the occluding on purpose.

the candle and the level didn't come back. neither did the person. what came back up the stairs was the difference — one degree tilted off, walking on its own, wearing the shape of a walker.
stratum seven is the degree nobody ever spent, and it is the heaviest thing in the cellar. you go down with a candle and a level and you come back up with neither, still convinced there is a floor.
