The UK’s civil society network advancing Women, Peace, and Security and women & girls’ rights worldwide through collaborative advocacy, policy & research.
Dedicated funding and strong monitoring are vital for govt and civil society to track delivery on UK WPS commitments. This week GAPS Director Eva Tabbasam told the IDC WPS inquiry that progress on the UK WPS NAP has stalled - and how it can begin to be addressed. #WPS#UNSCR1325
The UK is halfway through its five year National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, but as Eva Tabbasam of @GAPS_Network told us this week, without a budget and more formal structure there is no way of knowing how effective it is and whether it is achieving its goals.
📍The Govt has not yet responded to the International Development Committee report into WPS.
➡️Responding is an opportunity for Govt to show how it will action its commitments on WPS and women and girls. The delay is of deep concern and we will keep pushing for accountability.
This week the FCDO launched its International Framework on Women and Girls. While the commitments are welcome, resourcing and delivery is key. Read our full response here ⤵️

Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP admitted to us that the Government needs to do more to link the work of international development with defence.
We look forward to the Government taking steps to realise this.
See our response to the @CommonsIDC report ‘Peace under pressure: Protecting Women, Peace and Security’. The report follows the Committee’s inquiry into Women, Peace and Security (WPS)’ https://t.co/BbcMfLu0ui
We maintain that the only way to truly put women and girls at the heart of foreign policy will be to reverse the cuts. The Government’s own Equality Impact Assessment further confirms that these reductions will have negative
impacts on Women & Girls. @CommonsIDC
We welcome this report by the IDC which reflects a number of GAPS's longstanding proposals and recommendations. As cuts to UK ODA bite, this is a reminder of the importance of upholding the WPS agenda globally and in the UK. We urge the govt to action its recommendations.
Peace agreements are 64% less likely to fail when women meaningfully participate, yet in 2023 women made up only 9.6% of negotiators.
The Government must do more to aid change, and deliver on its obligations to the Women, Peace and Security agenda ⬇️

Today the Foreign Sec announced the UK's future ODA allocations. Commitments to women & girls & to protect central funding for VAWG, WPS and PSVI are welcome, but significant ODA reductions remain & do not match the scale of global need.

The UK cannot claim to champion the WPS agenda while advancing policies that undermine refugee protection. Read the full GAPS Network statement on the UK Govt latest immigration proposals here: https://t.co/Vs6CpNY05H
🚨Last week we launched our new website https://t.co/gJ0ro4z2at
At a time when progress on WPS matters more than ever, we hope the website improves access to information and amplifies the diverse voices of women and girls affected by conflict and insecurity.
#WPS#UNSCR1325
Yesterday we heard from @CPJElmore, Minister for Multilateral Human Rights at the @FCDOGovUK, he told us that the Government is prioritising women, peace and security when having conversations at the United Nations.
Tomorrow at 2pm we're questioning @CPJElmore, Under Secretary of State for Multilateral Human Rights at the @FCDOGovUK and @AlistairCarns, Minister of State for the Armed Forces at @DefenceHQ on the UK's progress in protecting women and girls around the world.
As part of the 16 Days of Activism on Eliminating GBV we have published findings from our recent WPS Expert Roundtable with @ODI_Global@GAPS_Network, @rn_wps here: https://t.co/8lBGcQLkFt
We welcome the Foreign Secretary’s @YvetteCooperMP commitment to the #WomenPeaceSecurity agenda on its 25th anniversary.
The UK has reaffirmed its leadership on this agenda, now it’s time to back that commitment with action, funding & accountability. #UNSCR1325#NoWomenNoPeace
25 years since #UNSCR1325, the Women, Peace and Security agenda remains central to UK foreign policy.
Peace and security are not possible without women.
It’s on all of us to help make this a reality.
On this anniversary, we stand in solidarity with all those advancing peace, equality, and justice in the most challenging contexts. #WPS25#ReclaimWPS25
📢 25 YEARS OF WOMEN, PEACE & SECURITY
On 31 Oct 2000, the UN adopted Resolution 1325 on WPS, a landmark moment recognising that peace is impossible without women’s full & meaningful participation. #WPS25#ReclaimWPS25
This month we supported the #ReclaimWPS25 initiative, decentralising and bringing the agenda back to communities, gathering regionally with WROs and CSOs and reflecting on progress, challenges and strategising for the future.
