Addressing the NITI-State Workshop Series on ‘State EV Policies: Review & Recalibrate’ and the launch of the ‘India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) 2025’, organised by NITI Aayog, Dr. Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), highlighted the ongoing shift towards cleaner mobility, with electric mobility emerging as an important pathway for sustainable mobility. He noted that EVs are driving a silent revolution, with NITI Aayog forecasting a 49% CAGR in EV growth by 2030.

The dignitaries on the dais included Shri Rajiv Gauba, Member, NITI Aayog; Shri Satendra Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; Dr. O. P. Agarwal, Distinguished Fellow, NITI Aayog; Smt. Archana Mittal, Program Director, NITI Aayog; Smt. Niharika Rai, Secretary & Commissioner of Transport, Govt. of NCT Delhi; Shri Madhav Pai, CEO, WRI India; and Smt. Trupti Deshpande, Associate Partner & Lead, Energiva Ventures.

The Additional Secretary emphasised that localisation is central to building a resilient and self-reliant automotive ecosystem. Supported by initiatives such as the PLI Auto Scheme, critical components, including traction motors and converters, which were earlier dependent on imports, are increasingly being manufactured domestically. Out of 71 companies in the PLI Auto Scheme, 18 have achieved >50% localisation.

Highlighting the growing adoption of electric buses, he noted that State Transport Undertakings are targeting 50,000 e-buses, alongside increasing adoption by private operators. He also underscored the importance of charging infrastructure as a key enabler of EV adoption. India currently has around 67,000 chargers, including about 24,000 fast chargers. Under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, Rs. 2,000 crore has been allocated for charging infrastructure. Proposals for 7,254 EV public chargers amounting to Rs. 729.34 crore have been sanctioned to 3 OMCs (IOCL, BPCL & HPCL) and 10 States to support charging infrastructure, with other States encouraged to submit proposals.

India’s electric mobility journey has reached a landmark milestone. 🇮🇳

Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi, India is accelerating the adoption of electric mobility through policy support, technological innovation and a strong push for indigenous manufacturing, paving the way for a sustainable and future-ready mobility ecosystem.

As per the VAHAN Portal, Over 1.02 crore EVs have been sold in India from 2011–12 to 2026–27, reflecting the growing adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
