What would happen if antibiotics stopped working?
"AMR is not simply a matter of infections becoming untreatable — it represents a crisis in which healthcare itself may cease to function."
In a recent interview with GARDP, Dr. Norio Ohmagari discusses the growing threat of AMR, the challenges facing antibiotic development and how global collaboration could help strengthen healthcare systems in Japan and beyond.

Antibiotic access is often framed as a choice between overuse and underuse. But the real challenge is optimal use: getting the right treatment to the right people at the right time..
📅 Join GARDP on 27 October at 12:00 PM CET for a timely webinar exploring whether antibiotic use reflects resistance levels, disease burden and local realities, and what it takes to deliver effective treatments to high-burden populations.
We’ll also examine GARDP’s public-private partnership model in action, including the recent approval of zoliflodacin in Thailand, just six months after its US FDA approval.

🌍 “Innovation doesn’t happen in silos.”
At #GAMRIC2026 in Lisbon, Peter Beyer reflects on why GARDP supports this one-of-a-kind conference: creating space for researchers and innovators to exchange ideas, find partners and connect work across the AMR field.
The next GAMRIC conference moves to Bangalore 🇮🇳, 7–9 September 2027, bringing the conversation closer to countries carrying a significant burden of AMR.

🚀 #GAMRIC2026 kicks off in Lisbon
For the next three days, people working across #AMR are coming together to talk about what is changing in the science, where the gaps remain, and what it will take to develop better tools against AMR.
Come meet the team!
Strong laboratory systems are essential to the responsible use of Reserve antibiotics.
In Brazil, GARDP and Fiocruz are working with hospitals and laboratories to understand local resistance profiles, including susceptibility to cefiderocol.
Recently, microbiologists from different institutions came together at Fiocruz’s LABSUR for hands-on training in antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
The work will help strengthen technical capacity and generate evidence to inform public health discussions and future antibiotic stewardship.

Newly published GARDP-sponsored research offers encouraging evidence for expanding treatment options for newborns with sepsis. Across 1,001 third generation cephalosporin resistant bacterial isolates, combinations of older antibiotics showed strong predicted activity.
For example, the study found that the combination of flomoxef and fosfomycin could stop 9 in 10 isolates tested in the laboratory. The findings support further evaluation of potential carbapenem-sparing treatments for neonatal sepsis.

Sepsis is a race against time. But increasingly, it is also a race against antimicrobial resistance.
In Germany, ~230,000 people develop sepsis each year, with >85,000 deaths. Some of the Gram-negative bacteria behind severe infections are becoming resistant to multiple antibiotics, while too few new treatments are being developed.
With the most difficult-to-treat Gram-negative infections expected to make up a growing share of resistant infections, associated deaths are forecast to rise sharply — by 70% by 2050.
This #WorldSepsisDay, “Invest in sepsis – save lives” must also mean investing in new antibiotics.
Peter Beyer writes in Tagesspiegel Background on why winning the race against time for sepsis is only half the battle.

#WorldSepsisDay #AMRIsBig #OurResponseIsBigger #AntibioticResistance #Sepsis
On #WorldSepsisDay, we’re thinking about what it takes to stay ahead of infections that can become life-threatening.
When sepsis develops, clinicians often have to start antibiotics before they know exactly which bacteria are responsible. That means the first-line treatment needs to work.
When antimicrobial resistance gets in the way, treatment can fail while a patient is deteriorating, and alternatives may be harder to find, more expensive or unavailable.
This year’s theme, “Invest in Sepsis – Save Lives,” is a call to keep pushing on prevention, faster detection and developing new and effective antibiotic treatments.
AMR is BIG. Our response must be BIGGER.

Can children with severe pneumonia safely switch from IV to oral antibiotics, and avoid longer treatment?
The PediCAP trial, published in @TheLancet, provides important answers.
Across 13 hospitals in five sub-Saharan African countries, 1,101 children aged 2 months to 6 years with severe community-acquired pneumonia were enrolled.
For children who had received at least 24 hours of IV antibiotics, improved clinically and could take oral medicines, switching to oral amoxicillin or co-amoxiclav was non-inferior to continuing IV antibiotics for five days for the risk of readmission or death.
The trial also found:
• No evidence that broader-spectrum co-amoxiclav was better than amoxicillin for oral step-down
• 4–5 days of total antibiotic treatment was non-inferior to 8 days
• Children receiving oral step-down had hospital stays around one day shorter than those receiving five days of IV treatment
These findings could support earlier discharge, reduce unnecessary IV antibiotic exposure and limit children's time in hospital, where they may be exposed to drug-resistant bacteria.
PediCAP was sponsored by the @Penta_ID, led by @innovativectu in partnership with @CityStGeorges, Wits Health Consortium (WHC) and partners, and funded through the EDCTP2 Programme. GARDP was a non-funded member of the PediCAP consortium.

What does AMR look like inside Bangladesh’s hospitals?
Journalist Md Zahid Hossain Khan takes us into ICUs and NICUs in a new @dailysunbd feature, exploring drug-resistant infections, neonatal sepsis, gaps in diagnostics, infection prevention and control, and the growing pressure on treatment options.
The story is part of GARDP’s first-ever #WithoutBordersMediaFellowship2025, the MSF-GARDP Grant on Antimicrobial Resistance. Zahid has also produced three AMR reports for Jamuna Television, covering neonatal treatment challenges, Bangladesh’s response to the antibiotic crisis and the role of hospital environments in the spread of resistant infections.

More than you might think.
Gonorrhoea is increasingly difficult to treat as resistance to antibiotics grows. And when treatment becomes harder, the consequences can reach far beyond the infection itself, affecting reproductive health, pregnancy and newborns.
That makes antibiotic innovation part of the sexual health conversation.
This is what a bigger response to AMR looks like: recognizing where drug resistance intersects with people’s lives and developing solutions for the infections that urgently need them.

This World Sexual Health Day, #EveryBody reminds us that everybody, and every body, should have the right to sexual health, rights and justice. That also means making sure everyone can access effective treatment(s) when they need it.

Developing a new antibiotic is only half the race.
🌍A new antibiotic can face resistance in as little as two years. Yet some countries can wait more than 10 years before getting access to them.
Developing new antibiotics is critical to staying ahead of resistance. But so is making sure that treatments reach the countries and communities with the greatest need, without unnecessary delays.
💊At GARDP, we believe antibiotic innovation and access must go hand in hand in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Public-private partnerships (PPPs) bring together public sector entities and private organisations to manage, advance or finance projects with public value. In antimicrobial R&D, they help facilitate drug development, advance research, provide financing and share risks between partners.
