Rwanda Biomedical Centre invites interested and motivated Master's students to join the Malaria Molecular Surveillance (MMS) Project, an innovative national surveillance and capacity-strengthening initiative funded by the Gates Foundation.

Through this three-year project, RBC is establishing a National Malaria Molecular Surveillance Platform and a National Malaria Reference Genomics Laboratory to strengthen real-time detection and monitoring of antimalarial drug resistance and diagnostic resistance markers.

Today, RBC celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of 20 NCD Surveillance Officers who completed the 3-month NCD Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program under the SPARK-NCD initiative.

The program equips frontline health workers with field epidemiology skills to strengthen #NCD surveillance and promote the use of data for evidence-based #prevention and #control of non-communicable diseases.

At the graduation ceremony, DG @CMuvunyithanked @AfricaCDC and other partners for their continued support, urging graduates to apply their skills to strengthen #surveillance systems, improve data quality, and bring high-quality NCD services closer to communities.

DG @CMuvunyi was appointed as a Board Member of the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Association, a partnership between European and sub-Saharan African countries advancing clinical research and innovation to combat poverty-related infectious diseases.

RBC is contributing to the 2026 #ScienceOfDefeatingMalaria Leadership Course, a flagship program developing the next generation of #malaria leaders across #Africa.

Following #Rwanda's successful hosting of the course in Kigali last year, as Faculty-in-Residence, DG @CMuvunyi led sessions for this year's cohort on malaria case management amid emerging resistance, genomic approaches to #malariaelimination, and protecting malaria gains during public health emergencies.

Together with academic partners from #Senegal, #Ghana, #Nigeria, Harvard University, and RBC, we are strengthening African leadership, science, and partnerships to advance a malaria-free future.

Today, Rwanda Biomedical Centre welcomed a @gatesfoundation delegation on an official visit to witness the progress of Integrated Malaria Genomic Surveillance within #Rwanda’s health system.

This partnership is strengthening the ability to detect and respond to emerging malaria threats in real time, while continuously monitoring treatment efficacy through resistance tracking.
The insights generated enable targeted, data-driven interventions that advance malaria control and improve public health outcomes.

Today, Rwanda Biomedical Centre joined the @gatesfoundation and leading #malaria genomics experts at the #MalariaGenomics2026 convening in Kigali to advance discussions on #Africa-n malaria genomics and drug resistance surveillance.

At the event, DG @CMuvunyi highlighted how mapping resistance has guided the deployment of Multiple First-Line Therapies (#MFT) across private clinics, regional hubs, and Community Health Workers.

Rwanda is closely monitoring the Ebola outbreak in the DRC.
There is currently no case of Ebola in Rwanda.
Preventive measures and heightened surveillance remain in place to protect the safety of People of Rwanda.

Rwanda Biomedical Centre, in partnership with @AfricaCDC , convened multisectoral stakeholders for the second session dedicated to developing #Rwanda’s National Action Plan for Health Security (NAPHS).

Speaking during the session, which focused on costing priority activities outlined in the #NAPHS framework, DG @CMuvunyi reaffirmed the importance of a multisectoral and One Health approach.
He also emphasized the need to integrate emerging technologies such as AI, strategically prioritize interventions amid constrained resources, and sustain preparedness to ensure timely and coordinated responses to public health emergencies.

The session outcomes will inform strategic investments and strengthen coordinated efforts to advance Rwanda’s health security in the years ahead.

Rwanda Biomedical Centre in partnership with @gatesfoundation concluded a two-week national #malaria microscopy training under the Nationwide Malaria Molecular Surveillance (MMS) initiative.

The training brought together #laboratorytechnicians from sentinel #surveillance sites nationwide & #scientists from regional laboratory hubs, all working toward one mission: strengthening #Rwanda's malaria surveillance capacity.

Key focus areas included:

✅Accurate malaria parasite detection & quantification
✅Precise species identification & differentiation.
✅ Parasite stage characterization for surveillance.
✅Mentorship & technical support cascading to sentinel sites.

2025 marked a turning point for health in Africa, with major challenges as well as critical opportunities.

In the face of multiple shocks and guided by our Heads of State, @AfricaCDC advanced a clear vision: Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS)—at the core of the continent’s autonomy, sovereignty and resilience.

I commend my Africa CDC colleagues, and our partners in standing with Member States.

I arrived in Egypt on 22 December 2025 for the end-year break and express my sincere appreciation to H.E. Prof. Khaled Abdelghaffar, Vice Prime Minister, and H.E. Dr. Awad Tajaldeen, Strategic Advisor to H.E. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, for the fraternal welcome and the warm hospitality of the Egyptian people
