Saw The Odyssey

It’s not great

Practically everyone feels miscast, except Holland and Pattinson, and Holland feels misdirected

Only the final third of the film has decent pacing while everything else is aggressively rushing to get out of the way for the next scene, with the exception of the massacre of the suitors which goes on quite a bit longer than it needs to

The dialogue clunks badly throughout, the modern language creates tonal problems but nearly every line (certainly every line of the first two thirds of the film) is just infodumping exposition for the audience’s benefit

The characters are very flat in how they’re written, they’re acting out their role in the plot but rarely show personality beyond that, with only a handful of noteworthy exceptions

The film is clearly very expensive, but so many of the decisions made surrounding costumes, props, sets, staging, lighting, etc all combine to make the film look cheap, as though Nolan is deliberately pursuing the aesthetic of a school play, an impression that is also not helped by the apparent indifference to scale (Odysseus’s crew grows or shrinks from scene to scene kind of arbitrarily but always feels smaller than it should)

The action choreography, when there is any (the sack of Troy that’s shown over and over, the encounter with the Laestrygonians, and the massacre of the suitors, that’s about it), is consistently pretty poor throughout

It feels as if Nolan really wanted to do the Ithaca stuff and was saddled with begrudgingly telling the rest of the story too
