These recommendations are now being presented to government who have a year to respond. From there, significant law change could take up to another yr or 2 so it won't be fast.

However, it is meaningful and if accepted, will impact our businesses & future of celebrancy forever.

The proposed law change suggests that the officiant is licensed to wed, not the religion, the faith or the location.

This is powerful news for England and Wales based celebrants, and a step in the right direction for the rest of the UK to take notice and reform in the same way.

This is a good start but doesn't go far enough.

Couples should be able to get married anywhere outdoors with a licenced celebrant! It shouldn't need to be the venue that is licensed but the individual performing the ceremony.

We await the Law Commission review (due for publication in July) that could finally be the start of a long-overdue modernisation of marriage law that will give true and meaningful choice to all couples, whatever their hopes for their wedding.

While the new MoJ consultation on outdoor weddings is welcome, it will only affect weddings in approved premises and registered places of worship. Reform is still needed on unregistered religious marriages & to recognise humanist & independent celebrants: https://t.co/PTk8Pq9uC9

Piecemeal reform is something the gov said they wanted to avoid! We hope this is a stepping stone towards the Gov’s consideration of more comprehensive marriage law reform and ALL celebrants are considered in future law reform to ensure that ALL couples have the freedom of choice

@Humanists_UK We agree that peacemeal reform is not the answer. However the government should consider ALL celebrants as part of any Marriage Law Reform as simply allowing only some celebrants simply replaces one form of discrimination with another.
All couples should be treated equally.
