I don’t really watch any true crime, but it’s hard to miss the story about Lindsay Clancy, it’s everywhere. I don’t think most of the women that are invested in this outcome are supporting her murdering her children. To me it’s a horrifying example of how flawed our medical system is when it comes to caring for mothers post partum. You get one 10 minute check up 6 weeks pp. That’s it. Postpartum psychosis is rare but very dangerous. If she truly had a psychotic break then no, she was not experiencing reality as we see it when she killed the children. And still that’s obviously not okay. It’s horrifying. With the amount of pills she was on and with little to no knowledge of the interactions of those pills (especially long term), with how many times she sought help, with her husband fucking off on ski trips, women are terrified that they are one sleepless night and one hormonal shift from this being them. Not because they don’t love their children, or love being a mom, but because this perfect storm could happen. We know very little about female health in general, let along in these very unique chapters where anything is normal and anything can be a symptom. We should all agree every woman deserves better care. For being the world’s wealthiest nation we should be treating postpartum care much differently, we should be serially discussing maternity and paternity leave. We are having a national crisis of the breakdown of the nuclear family, and birth gap crisis. It’s not hyperbolic to say it’s a matter of national security and the future of our nation depends on families having children and being mentally and physically healthy. So no, women aren’t supporting a mother killing her babies. They’re saying the system is broken, and we need to wake up and fix it.
