We are proud to accelerate delivery of the future USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127) to the fleet.
“BIW is leaning into the country’s need for faster delivery of ships to the nation’s fleet,” BIW President Charles F. Krugh said. “Collaboration between our shipbuilders and the Navy’s Supervisor of Shipbuilding to accelerate delivery of Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127) is just one example. Working with and listening to our employees to identify opportunities to build ships faster is delivering meaningful results.”
🚨📰⚓️ #USNAVY UPDATE: Navy Accepts Accelerated Delivery of Future USS Patrick Gallagher
WASHINGTON - The U.S Navy accepted delivery of future USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127), the final Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-Class destroyer, from Bath Iron Works, May 28.
The delivery, which marks the official transfer of the ship from the shipbuilder to the Navy, was accelerated by more than two months, due to exceptional builder’s sea trials. The trials executed hull, mechanical, electrical and combat systems at sea testing in series, during a single accelerated effort.
“Our nation’s leadership, including Secretary Hegseth and Acting Secretary Cao have been very clear—build ships faster,” said William Mahan, Performing the Duties of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition. “Thanks to innovative collaboration between the Navy and industry, we’re doing exactly that.”

Today, May 21, 2026 — we celebrated the start of fabrication of the future USS Thomas G. Kelley (DDG 140) at our Structural Fabrication Facility.
DDG 140 is the 48th of its class built at Bath Iron Works and the seventh Flight III Arleigh Burke destroyer to start construction at the Maine shipyard. Advancements in radar and combat systems make Flight III Arleigh Burkes the most technologically advanced surface combatants in the world. The ship’s namesake, retired Navy Capt. Thomas Kelley, a Medal of Honor recipient for heroism in in the Vietnam War, attended the Start of Fabrication ceremony, today.
BIW President Charles F. Krugh, stated, “Bath Iron Works is proud of its mission to build the finest surface combatants for the U.S. Navy,” Krugh said. “We take seriously our responsibility to adapt and evolve so we remain on the cutting edge of ship construction, building ships on schedule and with BIW quality so they perform when called upon – much as a young Lt. Kelley did while commanding a column of river assault craft in Vietnam.”
Last Wednesday, May 13 — we recognized the commitment and contributions of our first-shift Bath Iron Works shipbuilders who celebrated 5 to 10 years of service in March.
Your dedication continues to uphold our 141-year tradition of excellence—Bath Built, Best Built!
Today, May 19, 2026 — we celebrated the start of fabrication of the future USS J. WIlliam Middendorf (DDG 138) at our Structural Fabrication Facility.
DDG 138 is the 47th of its class built at Bath Iron Works and the sixth Flight III Arleigh Burke destroyer to start construction at the Maine shipyard. Frances Middendorf, daughter of the namesake and a sponsor of DDG 138, activated the burning machine to cut the ceremonial first steel for the ship.
BIW President Charles F. Krugh said construction of this ship, the latest in the Arleigh Burke class, will benefit from the accumulated skill and wisdom of thousands of talented shipbuilders.
The ship is named for the late J. William Middendorf, who served his country as a Navy officer, Secretary of the Navy, Ambassador to the Netherlands, Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States and U.S. Representative to the European Union.

#DidYouKnow? | The AN/SPY-6 is a very powerful radar system being equipped on all Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. Variations are also being developed to retrofit on existing ships. So where does the name “AN/SPY-6” come from?
Under the Joint Electronics Type Designation System, which is used to name all Defense Department electronic systems, the "AN/SPY-6" designation represents the 6th design of an Army-Navy (hence the AN) electronic device for surface ship surveillance radar system.
SPY is not an acronym but refers to: S: Detection/Search; P: Radar; Y: Surveillance, in other words: a radar system for surveillance and search.
